In defence of local libraries
This site exists to campaign for all local libraries in North Yorkshire to be kept open. Maybe some changes will have to be accepted, but we urge North Yorkshire County Council to find ways to deliver library services throughout the county. We reject the easy option of closures.
Petition to exempt libraries from rates
I've started the petition "Members of Parliament: Exempt libraries from rates" and need your help to get it off the ground. Will you take 30 seconds to sign it right now? Here's the link:
Here's why it's important:
Councils are planning further huge cutbacks of libraries. A significant cost for a library is business rates. No services are offered in return. Business rates are simply a contribution to provision of public services. It is madness for a public service to pay for public services. Apart from the cost currently falling on councils, business rates on libraries make it harder for community groups to run libraries. Please write to your MP, tweet #nolibraryrates, and encourage other library supporters to sign the petition.
You can sign my petition by clicking here.
Thanks! Martin Brampton
Fighting together, not fighting each other
Our aim is to avoid fighting to keep one library open at the cost of another. All the county's libraries provide a valuable range of services that are needed locally.
Town and parish councils, along with other local groups, are ready to talk to the county council about how best to keep all the libraries open. We need the county council's officers to work with local people to find solutions. The county must take responsibility for the continuing success of the library service, even though it may have to work with others to achieve it.
Write on our library wall
No, not graffiti! But we've provided a mechanism where you are welcome to add your comment for everyone to see. Click on "Post a Comment" and tell us what you think. Read what others have written, and click on the links to show your agreement or disagreement.
Community Library Problems
Volunteer effort is valuable and can enhance libraries. But relying too heavily on volunteers has drawbacks. A good summary of the 'cons' can be found in Public Libraries News
